This Valentine’s Day, we want to hear about that perfect moment when you knew your spouse or partner was “the one” for you.
“The One”
I was a single guy in Orlando, FL when I answered an ad for Roommates.com.
As Jenn likes to tell the story, she and her female roommate, Brie, were looking for another girl, some hot guy, or some gay guy to live with. When I first met Jenn and Brie for dinner to discuss possible living arrangements, I brought them flowers just to be nice. I had on a black t-shirt, jeans, and had hoops in my ears which was basically how I dressed all the time. My appearance apparently did put me in the “hot guy” and/or “gay guy” category. They both had boyfriends at the time so were essentially off-limits as far as my dating habits were concerned.
Everything went well over dinner and they invited me to check out the apartment. I was just looking forward to living with two hot girls because hot girls usually have hot friends so the apartment could have been knee deep in ferrets for all I cared. But, during the showing, I noticed the pantry door was off of its track. I easily fixed the door with a Phillips screwdriver and essentially sealed my roommate deal making me “the one” for them.
During our first year together living the Three’s Company lifestyle Jenn had broken-up with her boyfriend. I was working two jobs, mostly out of boredom, but when I did have free time, Jenn and I developed a pretty close relationship. She had made some efforts to set me up with some of her friends but, unbeknownst to me, Jenn had become attached to me.
And it was during a late evening when we were strolling around our apartment complex that we stopped at the little playground area. It was here she had confided her growing affection for me and I for her. There was a brief silence and I awkwardly challenged her to a game of Tic Tac Toe next to the slide. Triumphant, I shouted, “I win!” and kissed her. Immediately afterwards, the sprinklers came on.
Of all the girls I’ve kissed in my lifetime, nothing like that ever happened.
It was the kiss of death for my bachelor lifestyle and this year we’ll be celebrating 6 years together as a married couple and 10 years as best friends.
