Legendary R&B singer Etta James dead at 73
Singer Etta James, who over the course of a nearly six-decade career won 17 Grammy awards, has died in California, according to a statement from her manager. She was 73 years old.

James, who is perhaps best known for her jazzy reworking of the 1941 song At Last, had recently been hospitalized for complications of leukemia. She was also suffering from dementia and kidney problems at the time of her death.

“It’s a tremendous loss for her fans around the world,” manager Lupe De Leon said. “She’ll be missed. A great American singer. Her music defied category.”
